They said to him, “Why did you not converse with him?” He replied, “That man delights in speaking, whereas I delight in silence.”
Al-Dhahabī related to me, on the authority of the Shaykh—may Allah have mercy on him—that the Shaykh told him Ibn Daqiq al-ʿId had said to him after listening to his discourse, “I never imagined that Allah still(1) creates the like of you(2)!”
On the twenty-seventh day of that same month of Jumada, the Shaykh reached(3) Damascus by the postal relay(4).
(1) Not in MS F.
(2) The intended sense is: “I never imagined that anyone comparable to you in learning and memorization would appear.” This echoes al-Mizzi and others, who said that no equal had been seen for about five hundred years. The phrase occurs in several sources; the version closest to the meaning cited here is Ibn Kathir’s: “I do not think anyone like you will ever again be created.” See Al-Jamiʿ, pp. 417, 470, 484, 603, 671, 722. It is nevertheless preferable to avoid this wording, as its literal sense can be misleading; see Muʿjam al-Manahi al-Lafziyyah, pp. 488–489.
(3) MS K reads: “And on the day …,” whereas MS B has: “ … on the twenty-… he arrived.”
(4) In MSS F and K: “ʿala bab” (“at the door”).
