whatever you are upon.” Reported by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, and others (1).

In the sound hadith (2) addressed to the slave-girl, he asked, “Where is Allah?” She replied, “In the heaven.” He then asked, “And who am I?” She answered, “You are the Messenger of Allah.” He said, “Set her free, for she is a believer.”

Likewise, in the authentic hadith: “When Allah created the creation He wrote in a book that is with Him, placed above the Throne: ‘My mercy has outstripped My wrath.’” (3)

And in the hadith describing the taking of the soul: “until it is carried up to the heaven wherein Allah is.” (4)

And the words of ʿAbd Allah ibn Rawaha, which he recited before the Prophet and which the Prophet approved:

(1) Reported by Ahmad (no. 1770), Abu Dawud (4723), al-Tirmidhi (332), Ibn Majah (193) and others, on the authority of al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib. The hadith is weak; see the marginal note on al-Musnad, 3/293. Nevertheless, Shaykh al-Islam (Ibn Taymiyya) states—in some copies of al-Hamawiyya, pp. 222–223, al-Sumay‘i ed.—“Although this hadith is recorded by the compilers of the Sunan such as Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, al-Tirmidhi and others, it is transmitted through two well-known chains; a flaw in one chain does not invalidate the other. It was also narrated by the ‘Imam of the Imams,’ Ibn Khuzayma, in Kitab al-Tawhid, 1/334, a work in which he stipulates that he cites only what a reliable narrator transmits from another reliable narrator with an unbroken chain back to the Prophet.” See also Ibn al-Qayyim, Tahdhib al-Sunan, 4/2158–2163. MS Kh notes only: “Narrated by Abu Dawud.” (2) The other manuscripts read: “in the authentic hadith.” The report is found in Sahih Muslim (no. 537) on the authority of Muawiyah ibn al-Hakam al-Sulami. (3) Narrated with similar wording by al-Bukhari (7422) and by Muslim (2751) on the authority of Abu Hurayrah. This hadith and the one before it are absent from MS Kh. (4) MSS F and K read: “ya‘ruju ila” (ascends to).
