and an answer concerning the unbelievers from among the Tatars and others, examining whether the guardians lodged in their hearts exert any influence (1);
he also produced an exposition of Shaykh ʿAbd al-Qādir’s words in several places, amounting to roughly one volume (2);
a doctrinal principle on the verse, “Enter Paradise for what you used to do” (Qur’an 16:32), together with the Prophet’s saying, “None of you will enter Paradise by virtue of his deeds” (3);
an answer about Yazid ibn Muʿāwiya, whether it is permissible to curse him or not (4);
a principial treatise on the merits of Muʿāwiya (5);
and a reply on whether al-Khiḍr has died or remains alive (6), in which he adopts the view that he has died.
(1) The word khafara (written without diacritical dots) appears in the base manuscript; in MS F it was misread as khadra. The phrase “wa-hal lahum” (“and do they have”) is absent from MS B.
(2) Among these is a marginal commentary on Futuh al-Ghayb, cited by Ibn Rashiq (p. 298); it is printed in Majmuʿ al-Fatawa 10:455–548 and in Jamʿ al-Rasaʾil 2:73–189, ed. Muhammad Rashad Salim.
(3) Recorded by al-Bukhari (no. 6463) and Muslim (no. 2816) on the authority of Abu Hurayra; the text is reproduced in Jamʿ al-Rasaʾil 1:143–152.
(4) Cited by Ibn Rashiq (p. 299); published in Majmuʿ al-Fatawa 4:481–488, and again in Jamiʿ al-Masaʾil, vol. 5, pp. 139–158, and vol. 6, pp. 253–267, under the title “A Question on the Killing of Husayn and the Ruling on Yazid.”
(5) Majmuʿ al-Fatawa 4:453–480 contains Ibn Taymiyya’s answer to a query about the faith of Muʿawiya.
(6) Mentioned by Ibn Rashiq (p. 299); see Jamiʿ al-Masaʾil, vol. 5, pp. 131–137, and Majmuʿ al-Fatawa 4:337 and 27:100. The fatwa found in Majmuʿ al-Fatawa 4:339 that affirms al-Khidr’s continued life contradicts Ibn Taymiyya’s detailed statements elsewhere and the reports of his pupils—including the present author and Ibn al-Qayyim (al-Manar al-Munif, p. 64). Qutb al-Din al-Khidrī al-Shafiʿi (d. 894 AH) composed a manuscript treatise on al-Khidr in which he notes that some attributed to Ibn Taymiyya belief in al-Khidr’s life; he replies that the cited fatwa merely quotes those who hold that view and is not the Shaykh’s own position, and that all of Ibn Taymiyya’s authentic fatwas affirm al-Khidr’s death. See the introduction to Jamiʿ al-Masaʾil, fifth collection, pp. 8–9.
