He also produced a lesson delivered at the Sukariyyah on the Basmalah (1), a self-contained fascicle;
and a lecture for the Hanbalis on the verse, “It is not for the believers to go forth all at once” (Qur’an 9:122), an excellent fascicle;
and a treatise refuting those who claim that the Qur’an has an esoteric layer, and that each layer in turn possesses yet another—seven strata in all (2);
and a study on the human intellect and soul;
and the Halabiyyah (3) on the divine attributes—whether they are, (4) in any respect, something added to the Essence or not;
and a refutation of Ibn Sīnā in his al-Adhawiyyah Epistle, amounting to roughly one volume (5);
and an answer to the question of whether a servant is punished merely for intending to sin (6);
and a reply concerning the litany of Abū al-Hasan al-Shādhilī (7) and kindred compilations, set out in a succinct yet substantial volume (8).
(1) MSS F and K add the phrase “with the basmala.”
(2) The words “and that this inner meaning has another inner meaning” are missing in MSS F and K; they are probably identical with the passage printed in Majmuʿ al-Fatawa 13:230–269.
(3) The base manuscript reads “and al-Hilya,” which is likely a scribal error; the material seems to correspond to Majmuʿ al-Fatawa 6:339–350.
(4) MSS F and K read “wa-hal” (“and whether”).
(5) Ibn Rashiq notes it (p. 296). The treatise al-Adhawiyya, which denies the resurrection and allegorically reinterprets its proofs, has been published in an edition prepared by Dr. Sulayman Dunya.
(6) Ibn Rashiq (p. 297) says it runs to “about twenty folios”; the text is printed in Majmuʿ al-Fatawa 10:720–769.
(7) The words “Abi al-Hasan” appear only in the base manuscript.
(8) It was issued within this blessed project in my critical edition entitled “Refutation of Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili concerning his two hizbs and his writings on the etiquette of the Path,” in a single volume (1429 AH).
