collected would amount to many volumes (1), some of which have been fully copied while others remain in draft. Among his writings on this subject are: the Kilāniyya (2), the Baghdādiyya (3), the Qāhiriyya (4), the Azhariyya (5), the Baʿlabakiyya (6), and the Miṣriyya (7).
(1) Copy K reads: “ijtamaʿat” (have come together).
(2) In copy F the word “al-kullabiyya” is a scribal corruption. Ibn Rashiq (p. 296, al-Jami) writes: “It is an answer on the Quran question, in a small volume.” The treatise is printed in Majmu al-Fatawa 12:323–501.
It is so named because the query arrived from Kilan—also pronounced Kilan or Jilan—now an Iranian province on the Caspian Sea. Historically the name covered many lands beyond Tabaristan. Jilan has no major city, only villages in mountain meadows; natives are called jilani or jili, while Persians say kilan. Countless scholars in every discipline trace their nisba to the region. See Mujam al-Buldan 2:201.
(3) Ibn Rashiq (p. 297, al-Jami) says: “It is a question concerning the Quran.” The shaykh also has a tract entitled al-Baghdadiyya fima yahill mina al-talaq wa-yuharrim (The Baghdad Treatise on What Makes a Divorce Lawful or Unlawful), printed in Majmu al-Fatawa 33:5–43.
(4) Copies B, F, and K—and Ibn Rashiq (p. 297, al-Jami)—read “wa-l-qadiriyya,” adding: “It is a Quran question, about ten folios.” I follow the wording of the autograph, which matches the author’s habit of naming treatises after the places from which questions originated.
(5) Ibn Rashiq (p. 297) puts its length at “a little over twenty folios.” Al-Futuhhi cites passages in Sharh al-Kawkab 2:34–40, and al-Mardawi in al-Tahbir 3:1278–1282. The work was later included in Jami al-Masaʾil, fifth collection, 5:123–129.
(6) Ibn Rashiq (p. 296) reports: “He discussed therein people’s divergent positions on kalam, about twenty folios.” The piece has been printed repeatedly, most recently as an MA thesis at Umm al-Qura University from a copy in the author’s own hand. It also appears in Majmu al-Fatawa 12:117–161 without a title, opening: “Section: that the Magnificent Quran is the speech of Allah and none of it is the speech of anyone else.”
(7) Ibn Rashiq (p. 296) states: “A reply on the Quran, sent from Egypt, about seventy folios.” It is reproduced in Majmu al-Fatawa 12:162–234. Among the items Ibn Rashiq lists but the editor omits is: “Answer to a question on the Quran: is it letter and sound or not?—about thirty folios.”
