He also composed two further works refuting formal logic, amounting in total to roughly a single volume (1). He authored a two-volume book on his ordeal in Egypt (2), in which he refuted the proponents (3) of the doctrine of the self-subsisting speech (kalām nafsi) from about eighty different angles (4). On the question of the Quran he produced many treatises, methodological principles, replies, and other writings that, if
(1) Al-Safadi notes in Ayan al-Asr (p. 354, al-Jami edition) and again in al-Wafi (p. 477, al-Jami) that the shaykh produced a one-volume treatise on mantiq (formal logic), followed, he says, by another slighter volume. In reality, the shaykh wrote a section entitled “Regulating the Universals of Logic and Its Flaws,” printed in Majmuʿ al-Fatawa 9:255–319. The work now circulating under the title Naqd al-Mantiq (Demolition of Logic) was not so named by the shaykh but by the publisher, and its main subject is not logic; most of it concerns the creed of the people of hadith, with only the final pages answering a question on logic and whether its study is a communal obligation (pp. 155–209). That latter portion was extracted and reprinted in Majmuʿ al-Fatawa 9:5–82.
(2) This is the treatise commonly called al-Tisʿiniyya (“The Ninetyfold”), so labelled because the shaykh refutes the proponents of kalam nafsi (the doctrine of God’s internal speech) from roughly ninety angles. It first appeared in Majmuʿat Fatawa Ibn Taymiyya 5:2–288 and was later issued in three volumes, edited by Dr. Muhammad al-Ajlan (Dar al-Maʿarif, Riyadh, 1420 AH/1999). Several alternative titles have been suggested; see the editor’s introduction, 1:56–59.
(3) From this point onward, manuscript Q has more than half a page obliterated.
(4) Ibn Rashiqq (p. 296, al-Jami) and al-Safadi (p. 354, al-Jami) put the number of arguments at eighty, whereas Ibn al-Qayyim in his Nuniya (p. 341, al-Jami) and others give ninety. The difference turns on whether certain subsidiary points are counted as distinct arguments or not.
