Al-Uqud al-DurriyyaIbn Abd al-Hadi

uṣūl al-fiqh (principles of jurisprudence) that are genuinely attractive; yet they have seized only its terms and outward structures while neglecting its realities and deeper meanings—much like the speck of silver in a counterfeit dirham. Were it not for that tiny fraction, the coin would never pass the scrutiny of anyone with a discerning eye.

Therefore I shall proceed to sift its true from its false, its sound from its flawed, in a brief, spontaneous discourse that the author has penned in haste. Allah is the One who grants success to whatever He loves and approves, and there is no power nor might except with Allah.” Here ends the preface of the book.

Among his other works are:

  1. Bayān al-Dalīl ʿalā Buṭlān at-Taḥlīl (Clarifying the Evidence for the Invalidity of the ‘Taḥlīl’ Marriage) (1).
  2. aṣ-Ṣārim al-Maslūl ʿalā Shātim ar-Rasūl (The Unsheathed Sword against the Reviler of the Messenger) (2).
  3. Iqtiḍāʾ aṣ-Ṣirāṭ al-Mustaqīm Mukhālafat Aṣḥāb al-Jaḥīm (The Necessity of the Straight Path in Differentiating from the People of Hellfire) (3) (4).
  4. Taḥrīr al-Kalām fī Ḥādithat al-Iqtisām (Clarifying the Discourse concerning the Incident of Division) (5), which some refer to as the Book
(1) The work has been reprinted many times; the finest edition is that of Dr. Ahmad al-Khalil, Dar Ibn al-Jawzi. Al-Baʿli’s abridgement appears in this project under my own editorial supervision. (2) It, too, has seen several printings; the best is the three-volume first edition (1417 AH) prepared by Shaykhs Muhammad al-Halwani and Muhammad Choudhry for Dar Ramadi. Al-Baʿli’s abridgement is reproduced here with my verification. (3) Copies B, Q, and F read: “fi mukhalafa” (on dissent). Ibn Rashiqq (p. 305) has: “fi al-radd ʿala ashab …” (in refutation of the adherents of …). (4) The work has been issued repeatedly; the latest critical edition, in two volumes, is by Dr. Nasir al-Aql. Al-Baʿli’s abridgement is included here with my own verification. (5) Copy K reads: “al-aqsam” (the divisions). See Ibn al-Zamalkani, pp. 13–14, for his remarks on the book. Ibn Rajab states in al-Dhail (p. 384, al-Jamiʿ ed.) that it is a single volume on the question of division (qisma), written as an objection to al-Khuwi concerning a specific legal case he had adjudicated.
