the meaning of a single verse becomes clear, the meanings of its counterparts become clear along with it (1).
He also said, “In this fortress on this occasion (2) Allah has opened up for me insights into the Qur’an and the fundamentals (3) of knowledge—things many scholars passed away still yearning to attain. I have come to regret having spent most of my time on matters other than the meanings of the Qur’an,” or words to that effect (4).
He sent us only a small portion of what he had written of this kind (5), while a great deal remained in the salla al-ḥukm (the judges’ repository) (6) after they removed his books from him. He died while they were still in their possession, and to this day [ق 13] about fourteen bundles remain with them (7).

(7) The author will note on p. 445 that “these books were taken to Judge Ala al-Din al-Qunawi (d. 729) and placed under his supervision in the Adiliyya Madrasa.” Al-Qunawi died one year after the Shaykh, so the books remained with the Shafiʿi judge until the amir Qutlubugha al-Fakhri retrieved them fourteen years later. Ibn Kathir relates in al-Bidaya wa-l-Nihaya, 18/440: “On Saturday, the third of Rajab 742, Qutlubugha al-Fakhri summoned the Shafiʿi judge and pressed him to produce the books impounded in the sallat al-hukm, which had been confiscated from Shaykh Taqi al-Din Ibn Taymiyyah in the Citadel during the days of Jalal al-Din al-Qazwini. After great reluctance the judge brought them, fearing for himself. Al-Fakhri seized them in the palace, dismissed the judge—angry enough to consider removing him for his resistance—and someone remarked that the books contained discussion of the question of ziyara (visiting the Prophet’s grave). Al-Fakhri replied, ‘The Shaykh knew Allah and His Messenger better than you.’ Delighted, he summoned the Shaykh’s brother Zayn al-Din Abd al-Rahman and Shaykh Shams al-Din Abd al-Rahman Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya, who had labored commendably for their release. He congratulated them, kept the books that night in his treasury for blessing, prayed Maghrib behind Shaykh Zayn al-Din in the palace, and lavished special honor on him out of love for the Shaykh.”
