“I used to receive it from you (1), yet I am weeping over the knowledge and faith that I learned from you.” He responded, “Knowledge and faith are still where they have always been; whoever seeks them will find them. So seek knowledge from four people”—and he named them—“and if knowledge escapes you with these, then it is nowhere to be found on earth (2). In that case, seek it from the Teacher of Abraham (3).”
Shaykh Abū ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rushayq (4)—who was among the Shaykh’s closest disciples—said:
(1) Copy B reads: "dhanb … asabtaha" ("a sin … you have committed"), whereas copy Q has only: "asabtaha" ("you have committed it").
(2) The words "fa laysa huwa fi al-ard" ("then he is not upon the earth") are missing from copy F.
(3) The base text reads: "qatibatan min muallim" ("all of them with their teacher"). Ibn Rashiq (p. 283) records the whole passage and names the four authorities as: "with Abu al-Dardaʾ, ʿAbd Allah b. Masʿud, Salman al-Farisi, and ʿAbd Allah b. Salam." Ibn al-Qayyim cites it as well in Iʿlam al-Muwaqqiʿin, 6:197.
I add: I have not located this report through the chain of Malik b. Yakhāmir from Muʿadh b. Jabal. It is, however, transmitted from Muʿadh by several narrators, the most famous being the route of Yazid b. ʿAmirah al-Hamdani. This version is related by al-Tirmidhi (no. 3804), al-Nasaʾi in al-Kubra (no. 8196), Ahmad (no. 22104), Ibn Hibban (no. 7165), al-Hakim (1:98), al-Bayhaqi in al-Madkhal (p. 102), Ibn Saʿd (2:304), and others, with slight variations of wording. Al-Tirmidhi graded it hasan gharib, as noted in Tuhfat al-Ashraf (8:418) and the Krawkhi manuscript (fol. 258); the printed edition reads hasan sahih gharib. Al-Hakim declared it sahih according to the criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim. Shaykh al-Islam attributed the report to Malik b. Yakhāmir in Majmuʿ al-Fatawa, 4:531, and his disciple Ibn al-Qayyim followed him in Iʿlam al-Muwaqqiʿin, 2:23 and 6:197.
(4) The person meant is Abu ʿAbd Allah Muhammad b. ʿAbd Allah b. Ahmad, the grandson (sibt) of Ibn Rushiqq al-Maliki (d. 749/1348), who served as the scribe of Shaykh al-Islam. Ibn Kathir remarks that he "knew the shaykh’s handwriting better than the shaykh himself." For further details see our entry on him in al-Jamiʿ li-Sirat Shaykh al-Islam (p. 59). The present quotation comes from his treatise—erroneously ascribed to Ibn al-Qayyim—titled Asmaʾ Muʾallafat Ibn Taymiyya, pp. 283 ff. (within the Jamiʿ collection).
