Tafsir Asma Allah al-Husna li-al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

59 – 60 – The Oft-Forgiving: (The All-Forgiving)

He, may Allah Most High have mercy on him, said: “The All-Forgiving is He who has always forgiven sins and accepted the repentance of everyone who repents. In the hadith: ‘Allah says: “O son of Adam, if you came to Me with an earthful of sins, then met Me without associating anything with Me, I would come to you with an earthful of forgiveness.”’2

Allah Most High says:

‘Indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness.’ 3

Allah has opened the ways to attain His forgiveness through repentance, seeking forgiveness, faith, righteous deeds, kindness to His servants, pardoning them, fervent hope in Allah’s bounty, expecting good from Allah, and other means He has made conducive to His forgiveness.”4

61 – 62 – The Self-Sufficient, the Enricher5:

He, may Allah Most High have mercy on him, said: Allah Most High says:

“O mankind, you are in need of Allah, while Allah is the Self-Sufficient, the Praiseworthy.” 6

He is inherently self-sufficient, possessing complete and absolute self-sufficiency in every respect, owing to His perfection and the perfection of His attributes.

No deficiency can affect His attributes in any way, and He cannot be anything but self-sufficient,

1. These two names were explained further earlier, alongside His name, Most High, al-ʿAfuww (the All-Pardoning). 2. Reported, with similar wording, by Imam Ahmad in al-Musnad (5:147); by al-Tirmidhī in his Sunan (5:548), Book of Supplications, chapter on the merit of repentance and seeking forgiveness; by Ibn Mājah (2:1255), Book of Manners, chapter on the merit of good deeds; and by al-Dārimī (2:230), Book of Heart-Softening Narrations, chapter on the servant drawing near to Allah, on the authority of Anas. Al-Tirmidhī said: “This hadith is gharīb; we know it only through this route.” Shaykh al-Albānī graded it authentic on the strength of its combined transmission routes. See al-Silsila al-Sahīha (1:200). 3. Al-Najm (32). 4. Al-Haqq al-Wādih al-Mubīn, pp. 73–74. 5. The evidence for this name is Allah Most High’s statement: “And He found you in need and enriched you” (al-Duhā: 8). 6. Fātir (15).
