11 - The Most Kind: (The Most Kind, the Bestower, the Most Generous)
He—may Allah Most High have mercy on him—said: “Among His names, Most High, are the Most Kind, the Bestower, and the Most Generous. His kindness, gifts, and generosity encompass all creation. He bestows goodness, is unceasing in His beneficence, and is boundless in His gifts. Goodness is His attribute, and all blessings, outward and inward, are manifestations of this attribute. No creature can do without His beneficence and kindness even for the blink of an eye. These names indicate the vastness of His mercy and His gifts, which extend to all existence as His wisdom requires. His beneficence is both general and particular:
His general beneficence is mentioned in His words:
‘Our Lord, You encompass all things in mercy and knowledge’ 2;
‘My mercy encompasses all things’ 3;
‘Whatever blessing you have is from Allah’ 4.
This is shared by the righteous and the wicked, the inhabitants of heaven and earth, those held accountable for their deeds and those who are not.
His particular beneficence consists of His mercy and blessings upon those who fear Him, as He says:
‘I shall ordain it for those who fear Me, give zakah, and believe in Our signs—those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered Prophet’—to the end of the verse5.
He also says:
‘Indeed, Allah’s mercy is near to those who do good’ 6.
And in Solomon’s supplication:
‘And admit me, by Your mercy, among Your righteous servants’ 7.
