Tafsir Asma Allah al-Husna li-al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

with the Praiseworthy and the Glorious providing further examples. The Praiseworthy denotes every praiseworthy quality and perfection belonging to Allah Most High, while the Glorious denotes the attributes of greatness and majesty. Closely related are the Majestic, the Beautiful, the Self-Sufficient, and the Generous.

Other examples are the Ever-Living and the All-Sustaining. The Ever-Living possesses perfect, magnificent life encompassing all the attributes of His Essence. The All-Sustaining subsists independently, has no need of any of His creation, and sustains everything that exists. Thus, this name encompasses all the attributes of His actions.

Other examples are His names the Magnificent and the Most Great: He possesses every aspect of greatness and grandeur in His Essence, names, and attributes, and is entitled to every form of veneration from the elect among His creation.

Another example is your saying, “O Possessor of Majesty and Honor!” Majesty encompasses the attributes of greatness, grandeur, and the various perfections, while honor signifies His entitlement to His servants’ utmost love and utmost humble submission, and the like.

It is thus clear that “the greatest name” is a generic designation. This is what the scriptural evidence and linguistic derivation indicate1. As reported in the Sunan collections2, he heard a man saying, “O Allah, I ask You by my testimony that You are Allah; there is no god but You, the One, the Self-Sufficient, who neither begets nor is born, and to whom none is equal.” He said, “By Him in whose hand is my soul, you have asked Allah by His greatest name: when He is invoked by it, He answers, and when He is asked by it, He gives.”

Likewise, in the other hadith, a man supplicated, saying, “O Allah, I ask You because all praise belongs to You. There is no god but You, the Bestower of Favors, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, the Possessor of Majesty and Honor. O Ever-Living! O All-Sustaining!” The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “By Him in whose hand is my soul, he has invoked Allah by His greatest name

1 This view reconciles the evidence concerning the meaning of Allah’s greatest name. Allah knows best. 2 Reported by al-Tirmidhī (3475), Abū Dāwūd (1493), and Ibn Mājah (3857), and by al-Nasā’ī (3/52) with different wording. Al-Albānī graded it authentic in Sahīh al-Tirmidhī, 3/163, no. 2763.
