Tafsir Asma Allah al-Husna li-al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

in His Book, where He, glorified and exalted, says:

“O you who believe, believe in Allah and His Messenger” 1.

Among the most important aspects of faith in Allah Most High—the first pillar of faith—is knowing Him, glorified is He, through His names and attributes: knowledge that fosters reverent fear and action in accordance with their implications, following the way of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamā‘ah.

Many considerations demonstrate the importance of the subject of Allah’s most beautiful names, including the following:

1 - Knowledge of Allah, His names and His attributes is, without exception, the noblest and most exalted of all branches of knowledge. The nobility of knowledge derives from the nobility of its subject, and the subject here is Allah, glorified and exalted, His names, His attributes and His actions. To devote oneself to understanding this knowledge is therefore to pursue the highest of aims, and for a servant to attain it is among the noblest gifts2.

2 - Knowing Allah Most High leads one to love Him, stand in awe of Him, fear Him, place hope in Him, remain mindful of His watchfulness, and devote one’s deeds sincerely to Him. This is the very essence of the servant’s happiness. There is no way to know Allah except by knowing His most beautiful names and gaining a deep understanding of their meanings.

3 - Knowing Allah, glorified and exalted, through His most beautiful names increases faith. As Shaykh Ibn Sa‘dī, may Allah have mercy on him, said: “Belief in Allah’s most beautiful names and knowledge of them encompass the three categories of monotheism: Allah’s oneness in His lordship, His exclusive right to worship, and His names and attributes. These categories are the joy and spirit of faith3, its foundation and its ultimate aim. The more a servant knows of Allah’s names and attributes, the more his faith increases and his certainty grows stronger”4.
