Tafsir Asma Allah al-Husna li-al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

its objects. This is the binding obligation: love for Allah must precede and prevail over every other love in the servant’s heart, and all other loves must be subordinate to it.

Love for Allah is the soul of deeds, and all outward and inward worship springs from it. The servant’s love for his Lord is a gift and kindness from Allah, not something attained through the servant’s own power or strength. It is He, Most High, who first loves His servant and places love in his heart. Then, when the servant loves Him through His enabling grace, Allah rewards him with a further love. This is truly pure beneficence, for both the cause and its outcome come from Him. This is not intended as an exchange; rather, it is His love for His grateful servants and their gratitude. The benefit thus returns entirely to the servant.

Blessed, then, is He who places and instils love in the believers’ hearts, then continually nurtures and strengthens it until, in the hearts of His chosen servants, it reaches a state before which all other loves pale. It gives them solace apart from their loved ones, lightens their afflictions, makes the hardships of obedience sweet, and brings them the various honors they desire—the highest being Allah’s love, attaining His pleasure, and finding joy in nearness to Him.

The servant’s love for his Lord is thus surrounded by two loves from his Lord: a preceding love through which he came to love his Lord, and a subsequent love expressing Allah’s appreciation for a love through which the servant became one of His sincere, chosen servants.

The greatest means by which the servant attains his Lord’s love—the greatest of all pursuits—are to remember and praise Him abundantly, turn to Him frequently in repentance and devotion, firmly entrust one’s affairs to Him, draw near to Him through obligatory and voluntary acts of worship, be truly sincere to Him in words and deeds, and follow the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—outwardly and inwardly. Allah Most High says:

‘Say, “If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you.”’ 1”2.
