97 – Al-Nāfi‘1: (al-Nāfi‘–al-Dārr)
98 – Al-Nūr2:
He, may Allah Most High have mercy on him, said: “Among His most beautiful names is Al-Nūr. Light is His magnificent attribute. His names are most beautiful, and His attributes are the most perfect. To Him, Most High, belong mercy, praise, and wisdom. He is the Light of the heavens and the earth3, who illuminates the hearts of those who know Him with knowledge of Him and faith in Him, and illuminates their hearts with His guidance. He illuminates the heavens and the earth with the lights He has placed within them. His veil is light; were He to remove it, the splendour of His Face would burn whatever His sight reaches of His creation4. Through His light, the Gardens of Bliss are illuminated. The light that is His attribute is among His magnificent attributes. Created light, however, is of two kinds:
Physical light, such as the light of the sun, the moon, the stars, and all other created things whose light is perceived by the eyes.
The second is spiritual light: the light of knowledge, faith, and obedience. These produce light in believers’ hearts in proportion to the realities of knowledge, the inward experiences of faith, the sweetness of obedience, and the joy of love present within them.
This light restrains a person from sin, draws him towards goodness, and calls him to perfect sincerity towards Allah. Thus, among the Prophet’s supplications, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was:
‘O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my hearing, light in my sight, light before me, light behind me, light above me, and light beneath me. O Allah, grant me light and increase me in light.’5.
